What Are Phonics Dominoes?
Phonics dominoes is a classroom game where students build a line or “train” of cards by matching questions to answers. Students can take turns adding to the line, or they can race to be the first to get rid of all their dominoes by solving quickly and accurately. This flexible format lets you decide how to use the game—fast-paced for energy or collaborative for teamwork. Whether students are practicing multisyllabic words, word endings, or affixes, they’ll stay focused because the game naturally provides motivation and a clear finish.

30 Skills Covered
Your students will practice phonics across all the major 2nd grade skill areas:
Blends and Digraphs include beginning L, R, and S blends in multisyllabic words, ending blends, three-letter blends, and digraphs with multiple syllables. Students also review diphthongs and strengthen their accuracy with complex letter combinations.
Syllable Types are practiced through closed syllable words, open syllable words, and final e (VCE) syllables. Consonant-le endings appear in two sets, giving students repeated exposure.
R-Controlled Vowels are studied in both one-syllable and two-syllable words, while additional work with long vowels includes multisyllabic practice for A, E, I, O, and U, followed by a mixed long-vowel review.
Word Endings and Affixes give students practice with contractions, silent letters, comparative endings, prefixes, suffixes, and trigraphs in multisyllabic words.
Advanced Patterns round out the set with TURE, SURE, TION, and SION endings along with practice distinguishing hard and soft C and G.
With this broad range of phonics practice, students build decoding skills, fluency, and confidence in reading longer, more complex words.
How to Play Dominoes
-
Shuffle the dominoes and place them face down. Each player draws 8.
-
The first player lays down a domino with a word or sound in the center.
-
The next player connects a domino with a matching answer.
-
If a player cannot move, they skip their turn and draw.
-
Play continues until one student uses all their dominoes.
The rules are simple to explain and quick to learn, so you can spend less time on directions and more time on meaningful literacy practice.
Differentiation Options
Racing
Divide dominoes evenly, start with one in the center, and let students race to be the first to connect all their pieces. This high-energy style builds focus and excitement while giving students repeated phonics exposure.
Collaborate
Give each team a set of dominoes and challenge them to connect all of them together in one big train. Then, play again to see if they can beat their previous time. This style encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and communication while reinforcing reading skills.
