What Are Math Dominoes?

Math dominoes is a classroom game where students connect math problems with their matching answers to build a domino train. Students can take turns or race to be the first to get rid of all their cards. This format adapts to any classroom—centers, guided groups, or whole-class review—and because it feels like a game, students stay motivated while practicing core concepts.

Measurement and Time cover money, telling time to the 5 minutes, and distinguishing between inches and feet or centimeters and meters.

This balanced coverage ensures students review every critical 2nd grade math standard in a way that’s interactive and enjoyable.

How to Play Dominoes

  1. Shuffle the dominoes and place them face down. Each player draws 8.

  2. The first player lays down a domino with a problem and answer in the center.

  3. The next player connects a domino with the matching answer.

  4. If a player cannot move, they skip their turn and draw.

  5. Play continues until one student uses all their dominoes.

The rules are simple, consistent, and easy to remember, so students can focus on skill practice instead of lengthy instructions.

Differentiation Options

Racing

Split dominoes evenly, place one in the middle, and let students race to connect all of their pieces. This fast-paced version encourages quick thinking and fact fluency.

Collaborate

Give each team a set and challenge them to connect every domino into one large train. After finishing, they can replay to beat their original time. This approach builds teamwork, problem-solving, and communication while reinforcing skills.
