Grab those safety goggles because it’s time to test some experiments! The Scientist Classroom Transformation is a fun way to connect math in the real world. In this activity, students become a scientist for a day and solve 10 different challenges around the room. Students can work individually, in pairs, or in groups to solve all the questions. The transformation aligns with common core standards.
SCIENTIST CLASS TRANSFORMATION STEP 1:
Students love the signs included in this classroom transformation. They say phrases like, “Wear Gloves at All Time” and “Keep Safety Goggles On.” It truly sets the scene for a day of science. I placed warning tape on my classroom door that labeled it as a bio-hazard. Students were very interested to see what we would be doing and it was quick to engage everyone. I also bought safety goggles and gloves for my class from Amazon to wear during this scientist classroom transformation, which are able to be reused for years to come!
SCIENTIST CLASS TRANSFORMATION STEP 2:
This classroom transformation works well with all elementary school students. Students have to complete different math challenges that all deal with grade-appropriate math problems. After a student completes a challenge, I check their work and sign off their recording sheet if they were correct. If not, they have to go back to the challenge and redo the problem.
Amazon also sells “mad scientist” wigs. I put one on during the scientist classroom transformation and said things like, “Excellent work, scientist!” and “Continue the great data findings!” when students completed each challenge.
SCIENTIST CLASS TRANSFORMATION STEP 3:
Once a student completes all ten challenges, the early finishers can complete the additional writing activity. They scan the QR codes in each poster placed around the room. When a student scans the QR code, they learn fun facts about famous scientists. Scanning the QR code itself is a way of teaching students about science and technology.
After finishing each classroom transformation, I always give special treats to my third graders. This time, I found pens that look like syringes on Amazon to give to my class as a reward for completing all ten challenges. Other teachers give out dojo points, erasers, and other fun trinkets as prizes!
The math challenges include a variety of skills that are normally shown on the end-of-the-year standardized testing. Depending on the grade level, a student will be tested on different subjects, but every transformation is science-themed and full of fun!

I also offer all room transformations in a DIGITAL format! This means students can complete the challenges on Google Slides if you’d like to save on paper. The QR codes/fun facts also come in a digital game format that students can complete and copy down online. You can learn more about how to do a digital room transformation here.
