This aligns with 4.OA.1 and 4.OA.2. The unit was designed for fourth graders, but would work great as a review for fifth graders or enrichment for third graders as well.
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
✅MULTIPLICATIVE COMPARISONS MINI LESSON
A mini-lesson included that fourth graders can complete with the teacher in class and glue into their notebooks to help them have something to reference throughout the year. This lesson does not include small pieces to cut out and is no prep for you. Students simply glue the page right into their notebook after completing the page during your whole group lesson. Students are taught how to solve multiplicative comparison statements in a variety of ways in this mini-lesson.
✅10 MULTIPLICATIVE COMPARISON WORKSHEETS
In the ten worksheets included, students practice solving multiplication and division comparison problems in equations, word problems, matching equations, and more. The worksheets are differentiated and made to be fun!
✅EMOJI MATH SORT
This is a sorting activity where students put a smile or a frown emoji on top of each task card. If the answer is correct, a happy smile is put on top of it. If the wrong answer was found, the students put a frown on top of the task card.
✅MULTIPLICATIVE COMPARISON MATH RIDDLES
There are 10 riddles included. Students read the paragraph and fill in the chart based on what they learned. There are clues and multiplicative comparison statements in each paragraph to help students “be the detective” and figure out how much of an object each person has using the clues given.
✅CUT AND GLUE ACTIVITY
Students use their multiplication and division skills to help them figure out where each pumpkin belongs in the pumpkin patch. When students read each multiplicative comparison statement and solve, they will know where each pumpkin should be glued. An answer key is provided.
✅ GAME #1: WHOLE CLASS GAME
I call this game “Bucket Filler!”. Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it’s correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).
✅ GAME #2: BUILD A CAMPSITE
Each player gets a background to build their campsite on. Playing cards and pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn an item for your campground. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items in their campsite wins!
✅ GAME #3: RACING GAME
This game is called “Line Them Up!”. In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!
All games come in color and black and white versions.

Aligns with Common Core 4.OA.1 and 4.OA.2:
- Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
- Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.
This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)
- MA.4.AR.2.2 Given a mathematical or real-world context, write an equation involving multiplication or division to determine the unknown whole number with the unknown in any position.
