Students love playing in partners, small groups, independently, or as a whole class. Once they learn the game rules, they can use them again and again with different sets of words.

Why This Resource Is a Must-Buy

  • Students stay motivated with fun, competitive gameplay. They grab the correct vocabulary card first to score—a thrilling way to review words.

  • Low prep: you get both color & black-and-white versions, editable cards, and blank templates so you can adapt or add your own word lists.

  • Flexible structure: works well as vocabulary centers, whole class review, small group work, partner activities, or independent practice.

  • Differentiation built in: with multiple word‐meaning sets, you can match student ability levels.

  • Focused on standards: develops reading comprehension through vocabulary development, aligned to 3rd-5th grade ELA expectations.

What’s Included?

  • 22 vocabulary games / word meaning sets

  • Answer keys for each set

  • Editable card sets for customizing with your own vocabulary words

  • Blank card templates for writing extras or substituting words

  • Multiple ways to play so review stays fresh and engaging

  • Printable versions in both color and black-and-white

How to Play Grab It

  1. Lay out all the circle cards face up.

  2. Stack all the rectangle cards face down.

  3. Flip a rectangle card. Students race to find the matching circle card that shows the correct meaning or example.

  4. First to grab it gets the card as a point.

  5. Continue until all rectangle cards are used. The student with the most cards wins.

Alternative Ways to Use It

  • Give each student or pair a subset of rectangle cards and see who matches all their cards first.

  • Time students to see how fast they can complete a full set, then try to beat that time.

  • Scatter circle cards around the room and have students walk or move around to find matches.

  • Use in a whole group format: display a rectangle card, and students compete to grab or point to the matching circle card.

  • Use as a “vocabulary scavenger hunt” during centers or station work.

Great for Many Teaching Moments

Use this in:

  • ELA centers for review or enrichment

  • Morning warmups or bell ringers to build vocabulary daily

  • Small group instruction for scaffolding or extension

  • Whole class vocabulary games to build engagement

  • Spiral review to ensure students retain word meanings over time
