WHAT IS THIS?

In this version, students solve themed clues to figure out which vegetable the deer ate out of the garden. Along the way, they practice short vowel CVC words (a mix of short a, e, i, o u) in a fun and meaningful way. Each clue feels like part of the adventure, and when the final clue is solved, students discover the culprit!

HOW TO PLAY:

  1. Read directions together and give out the suspect list.
  2. Students solve each clue, and each solution tells them what to cross off.
  3. When all the clues are complete, the mystery is solved and the culprit revealed!

It’s that simple—no cutting, sorting, or prep beyond printing. It’s truly print and go!

Please note: K–1 students WILL need support reading the directions and clues. This is not an independent activity and should be completed with the teacher.

WHAT MAKES READING MYSTERIES UNIQUE?

Reading Mysteries aren’t just a copy of Math Mysteries! They have brand-new clues, focus on reading skills, and even feature a different conclusion to the mystery.

The only thing that stays the same is the list of suspects students start with!

So, if you have both subjects, students can play during math and then again during reading for double the fun.

Bring the fun of an escape room for CVC words into your classroom with this easy-to-use mystery. Whether you use it during whole group, centers, or small groups, your students will be so focused on solving the mystery they won’t even realize how much phonics practice they’re getting.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Do these come with 3 clues or 5 clues?

Both! There are 2 versions so you can use the version that works best with your class. Or, you could differentiate and use the 3 clue version with some students and the 5 clue version with other groups. Both versions lead to the same conclusion/culprit, ensuring that students will not be aware of the different leveled assignments.

Are the phonics mysteries the same as the math mysteries?

No! Phonics mysteries have their own set of clues, focus on reading and phonics skills, and end with a different conclusion. The only part that’s the same is the initial list of suspects. But each mystery leads to a different culprit–check out the preview to compare them in detail.

Is a digital version included?

Yes! The digital version is available in Google Slides and the link is included in the printable PDF. You can download the Google Slides to use in PowerPoint if needed as well.

Who are the CVC Word Mysteries designed for?

Grade-level phonics mysteries include two versions (a grade-level skill review and a CVC short vowel version). The CVC Word Mysteries are a great option for teachers who only want the CVC version without the added grade-level review. Each one focuses only on short vowel CVC words and comes with both 3- and 5-clue options.

What should students do if they finish early?

A fast finisher directed drawing activity (6 unique drawings to choose from) is included for students who finish early! There is also a certificate of completion for every student. You could also have students work on incomplete assignments or read a book.

Will my students need support?

Yes. K–1 students will need teacher guidance to read and work through the clues.
