Description

Do your students need more practice with adding and subtracting fractions (the basics–an introduction to this concept)? Are you looking for engaging, rigorous 4th grade math activities that will help students learn how to add and subtract fractions and also decompose fractions (without taking hours to prep!)? Look no further! These print AND digital 4th grade math activities will meet your grade 4 students’ needs.

This resource is included in the 4th Grade Math Games Bundle. Click here to save 50% on math activities for the whole year!

There are 4 add and subtract fraction games to help students practice their math skills – in a fun way! They align with 4.NF.3A, 4.NF.3B, TEKS 3.3D and TEKS 4.3A,B. These 4th grade spiral review math activities are great for additional practice or could even serve as quick 4th grade math assessments during a fraction unit. They’re made to be flexible so you can use them how YOU want to!

WHAT’S INCLUDED? (PRINT AND DIGITAL–LIKE DENOMINATORS)

  • Activity: 1: Animal Feeding Time

Students solve basic addition and subtraction of fraction questions. Students do not do any regrouping. In this game, students match the animal with the correct equation (example: 5/8 – 1/8).

  • Activity 2: Build the Fraction

Students practice decomposing fractions into unit fractions. They see a fraction and need to “decompose” it on the road shown. (ex: 3/4 is 1/4+1/4+1/4)

  • Activity 3: Let’s Make Pie

Show 2 different ways to fill in the pie to show the fraction given using unit fractions. Then, write each fraction as an equation in the box.

  • Activity 4: Unicorn Multiple Choice

Students choose the correct multiple choice answer for the unicorns trying to solve math problems. Each question is a basic addition or subtraction equation with fractions with like denominators.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT:

There are 11 problems included in each of the 4 games (total of 44 questions).

  • Digitally: The first problem is always an example for students so they know what to do. I would recommend completing 5 questions during your lesson together and assigning the other 5 for students to complete independently. Or, assign all 10 after going over the first example slide together. They are provided in Google Slides so you can assign them in Google Classroom.
  • Print: Print the task cards out and put them in a math center. Have students record answers on the recording sheet provided. Students can use the self-checking answer key to check their work. You can choose between the color and black and white option.

—————————————————————————————————————

  • Aligns with Common Core 4.NF.3A

Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.

  • Aligns with Common Core 4.NF.3B

Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 ; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8 ; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.

  • Aligns with TEKS 3.3D

The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and explain fractional units. The student is expected to: compose and decompose a fraction / with a numerator greater than zero and less than or equal to as a sum of parts 1/.

  • Aligns with TEKS 4.3A

Students will represent a fraction a/b as a sum of fractions 1/b, where a and b are whole numbers and b > 0, including when a > b.

  • Aligns with TEKS 4.3B

Students will decompose a fraction in more than one way into a sum of fractions with the same denominator using concrete and pictorial models and recording results with symbolic representations.

Aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.FR.1.2 Represent and interpret fractions, including fractions greater than one, in the form of as the result of adding the unit fraction 1 to itself times.
  • MA.3.FR.1.2 Represent and interpret fractions, including fractions greater than one, in the form of as the result of adding the unit fraction 1 to itself times.
  • MA.4.FR.2.1 Decompose a fraction, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one, into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in multiple ways. Demonstrate each decomposition with objects, drawings and equations.
  • MA.4.FR.2.2 Add and subtract fractions with like denominators, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one, with procedural reliability.
  • MA.4.AR.1.2 Solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one.
