Description
This 3rd grade multiplication unit includes EVERYTHING you need to teach multiplication using equal groups in your classroom. Students will use these multiplication activities in a variety of ways to get familiar with multiplication equal groups and how they are an important part of multiplication. Multiplication strategies are an important part of third grade math and this unit aligns perfectly with 3.OA.1 as an introduction to multiplication. There are over 200+ pages included in this math unit.

This unit includes:
✅EQUAL GROUP MINI LESSON
The equal groups mini-lesson teaches the difference between different multiplication terms like repeated addition, product, times, double, twice, each time, factor, multiplication symbol, and product.
✅ 10 EQUAL GROUP WORKSHEETS
Students practice showing equal groups when given a multiplication equation, drawing multiplication pictures of equal groups, circling equal groups to solve multiplication equations, and matching equal groups of objects to multiplication equations while getting to color at the same time.
✅ 4 ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES
Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.
✅ EMOJI THEMED TASK CARDS
There are 24 emoji task cards that practice with multiplication equal groups. Students write a multiplication equation to solve each equation. You could use these task cards in SCOOT, as a scavenger hunt, or during math centers. Each task card shows a different equal groups picture for students to interpret.
✅CUT AND GLUE ACTIVITY
Students create a picture using the objects at the bottom. They fill in the multiplication equation and figure out the equation’s answer using the manipulatives in the picture. It’s a great hands-on activity as an introduction to multiplication. There are 10 pages included. These are perfect for students who need remediation with this skill or just some extra practice.
✅EMOJI MATH SORT
This is a sorting activity where students put a smile or a frown emoji on top of each task card. If the area is correct, a happy smile is put on top of it. If the wrong area was found, the students put a frown on top of the task card.
✅EQUAL GROUPS PENCIL ACTIVITY
Students receive manipulatives to cut out and they can make different sets of equal groups in their interactive math notebook using the objects they’ve cut out. Students can move the pencils around to make different multiplication equations.
✅GAME #1: SAFE OR STEAL
This game is great for enrichment! While I continue working on the equal groups strategy with my lower students, my high ability students play this in groups around the room. It’s a card game that is easy to learn and you can quickly teach it to students. They then get extra practice with the skill when they become fast-finishers.
✅ GAME #2: BUILD A CAMP GAME
Each player gets a background to build their camp on. Playing cards and pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your campsite. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items in their campground wins!
✅ GAME #3: RACING GAME
This game is called “Line Them Up!”. In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!
This is common core aligned to standard 3.OA.1. It’s meant for 3rd grade students but would be great enrichment for second grade or reteaching for fourth grade. There is a color and black and white version of each game and activity included.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core Standard 3.OA.1:
- Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each.
This aligns with 2nd Grade Texas TEKS:
- TEKS 2.6A: model, create, and describe contextual multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of concrete objects are joined
This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:
- TEKS 3.4D: determine the total number of objects when equally-sized groups of objects are combined or arranged in arrays up to 10 by 10
- TEKS 3.4E: represent multiplication facts by using a variety of approaches such as repeated addition, equal-sized groups, arrays, area models, equal jumps on a number line, and skip counting
This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)
- MA.3.NSO.2.2 Explore multiplication of two whole numbers with products from 0 to 144, and related division facts.
- MA.3.NSO.2.4 Multiply two whole numbers from 0 to 12 and divide using related facts with procedural reliability.
