Description

This 3rd grade multiplication unit includes EVERYTHING you need to teach multiplication using arrays in your classroom. Students will use these multiplication activities in a variety of ways to get familiar with multiplication arrays and how they are an important part of multiplication. Multiplication strategies are an important part of third grade math and this unit aligns perfectly with 3.OA.1 as an introduction to multiplication. This unit includes:

✅ARRAY MINI LESSON

The first part of the mini-lesson gives students manipulatives to cut out and they can make different arrays in their interactive math notebook using the objects they’ve cut out. The second part teaches the difference between rows and columns in arrays and gives students practice with this multiplication strategy.

✅10 ARRAY WORKSHEETS

Students practice drawing arrays when given a multiplication equation, drawing arrays when given a multiplication word problem, writing multiplication equations when shown an array, and matching arrays that are the same using the commutative property of multiplication.

✅ 4 ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES

Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.

✅ EMOJI THEMED TASK CARDS

There are 24 emoji task cards that practice with multiplication arrays. Students write a multiplication equation to solve each problem. You could use these task cards in SCOOT, as a scavenger hunt, or during math centers. Each task card shows a different array for students to interpret.

✅CUT AND GLUE ACTIVITY: ARRAY NEIGHBORHOOD

Uh oh! It looks like everyone forgot where they live! Use the clues to help everyone get home. Cut out each house and each person. On a separate piece of paper/construction paper, glue each person next to the house they live in. Students use their knowledge of arrays to solve the clues.

✅ ARRAY PUZZLES

There are 9 puzzles for students to put together. The 1 puzzle features “1x a number” arrays. The 2 puzzle features “2x a number” arrays. And so on. The puzzles go through the 9 facts.

✅GAME #1: ANIMAL MATCHING

Students match up each animal mom with the correc baby. There are 144 baby animals and mothers. There are 12 mothers that each have 12 kids. So there are 12 tiger moms that each have a x6 fact on them. Then, there are 12 baby tigers that each have an answer on them. You could give students all the animals at once or divide them into 12 matching sets. Then, students could work on a different set of facts at each math station. Or, you could differentiate and give a different set to each student.

✅ GAME #2: BUILD A VOLLEYBALL COURT

Each player gets a background to build their volleyball court on. Playing cards and pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your volleyball court. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items in their volleyball court wins!

✅ GAME #3: WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game “Bucket Filler!”. Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it’s correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

✅GAME #4: CRAYON SCRAMBLE

Students match the correct crayon matches together. They look at the arrays and count how many rows and columns are in each one. They then find the matching multiplication sentence. This is great as an introduction to multiplication because students do not need to solve to play. They only need to know how to put the multiplication equation together using the picture (array).

This is common core aligned to standard 3.OA.1. It’s meant for 3rd grade students but would be great enrichment for second grade or reteaching for fourth grade. There is a color and a black and white version included.

—————————————————————————————————————

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core Standard 3.OA.1:

  • Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each.

This aligns with 2nd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 2.6A: model, create, and describe contextual multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of concrete objects are joined

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.4D: determine the total number of objects when equally-sized groups of objects are combined or arranged in arrays up to 10 by 10
  • TEKS 3.4E: represent multiplication facts by using a variety of approaches such as repeated addition, equal-sized groups, arrays, area models, equal jumps on a number line, and skip counting

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.NSO.2.2 Explore multiplication of two whole numbers with products from 0 to 144, and related division facts.
  • MA.3.NSO.2.4 Multiply two whole numbers from 0 to 12 and divide using related facts with procedural reliability.
