2 VERSIONS OF EVERY MYSTERY (3 & 5 CLUES)

Differentiation can be tricky in any classroom. Every teacher has students of multiple ability levels who all require their attention. How do you help them all at once?

Two versions of an activity! With phonics mysteries, you can choose between the 3 Clue & 5 Clue versions to give each student exactly what they need.

Are you short on time or need fewer clues for students to solve? Use the 3 clue version! Do you have longer class periods or students who need a more challenging assignment? Use the 5 clue version!

PRINT AND DIGITAL

Choose between print and go or the digital version with Google Slides. These are easy to assign in Google Classroom and are perfect for teachers who have copy limits.

FAST FINISHER ACTIVITY

If students finish early, give them a certificate of completion and a directed drawing (includes 6) to complete while others continue working.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Do these come with 3 clues or 5 clues?

Both! There are 2 versions so you can use the version that works best with your class. Or, you could differentiate and use the 3 clue version with some students and the 5 clue version with other groups. Both versions lead to the same conclusion/culprit, ensuring that students will not be aware of the different leveled assignments.

How do I use this with my students?

You can use this whole group, small group, in partners, table groups, independently, as homework, and more! First graders will need support reading the directions the first few times they complete these mysteries. I’d suggest completing them with teacher support in whole group or small groups at first. As students become more comfortable, working in pairs and independently will become more feasible.

Are the phonics mysteries the same as the math mysteries?

Yes! The skills are completely different, but the clues are identical. Both the phonics and math mysteries follow the same pattern of crossing out clues and conclude with the same culprit or suspect. This intentional design allows you to combine clues from both subjects into a single mystery if desired. For instance, you could merge Clues 1, 3, and 5 from the math mystery with Clues 2 and 4 from the phonics mystery. This way, students can engage in both math and reading practice within the same activity.

Is a digital version included?

Yes! The digital version is available in Google Slides and the link is included in the printable PDF. You can download the Google Slides to use in PowerPoint if needed as well.

Why do the main mystery and the extra mystery look the same?

The main mystery and the extra mystery feature the same clues but focus on different skills. This design ensures that students of varying abilities can work on different mysteries without realizing they are tackling different challenges.

What should students do if they finish early?

A fast finisher directed drawing activity is included for students who finish early! There is also a certificate of completion for every student. You could also have students work on incomplete assignments or read a book.
