Roll up! The circus is in town. It is an exciting classroom transformation for my students. This classroom transformation is a circus themed real world activity that helps your third and fourth grade students learn multiplication strategies and have fun at the same time. It aligns with 3.OA.1.
Students will embark upon a day as a circus performer while practicing this difficult math concept. Multiplication can be difficult for third graders and this activity is great practice! To set up this classroom transformation, I have a step by step guide on how this works.
CIRCUS CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 1:
First, arrange your classroom. Turn it into a place that looks like a true circus. I set up a pop-up circus tent I found on Amazon right in the doorway of my classroom. This meant that each time my kids wanted to enter or leave the classroom, they had to crawl through the circus tent. This was a bit hit!
CIRCUS CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 2:
Second, tell your students that they are in a circus and will solve ten math challenges about multiplication strategies. In this classroom transformation, it involves multiplication with:
-multiplication using any strategy
-multiplication with popcorn!
CIRCUS CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 3:
Next, give each student a recording sheet where they can monitor the challenges they have completed so far and have it checked by the teacher. In the hands-on math challenge, kids use popcorn to practice multiplication. They make equal groups and have to count up each piece of popcorn to find the total. This hands-on learning experience really helped my class connect how multiplication can help you find an answer quicker than simply counting each piece one at a time.
CIRCUS CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 4:
Once signed by the teacher, the early finishers can move on to the writing activity. They scan the QR codes in each poster and learn additional facts about the circus.
This is a great activity for students who needs extra practice with multiplication strategies. It’s so easy to set up and implement.
