It’s time to go camping! This real-world math activity for third graders is about practicing division strategies and will make students feel like they are actually camping. It can be used as a unit review for your 3rd grade students before the final assessment takes place. It aligns with common core math standard 3.OA.2.
CAMPING CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 1:
For students to experience great camping trip, I printed the posters from this classroom transformation to hang on the door to make it feel like a real campsite. Also, I brought in some extra items to spice it up. I brought in some lanterns, fishing poles, and camping chairs I borrowed from a friend.
At Target, I found adorable campfire pillows that I placed around the room during this camping classroom transformation. Kids were able to read and snuggle with them while they worked all day long.
CAMPING CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 2:
In the hands-on math challenge, students use marshmallows to practice division. The marshmallows are sorted into equal groups to show that division is a quicker way to do repeated subtraction. Students completed all ten division strategy challenges to become a real camper.
Additionally, I brought in a tent borrowed from a friend. The kids loved going in it for the tent challenge and reading inside it during the rest of our day.
CAMPING CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 3:
As they completed the challenges, they got to practice division with equal groups, repeated subtraction, skip counting, and fact families, with marshmallows! Each child was given a recording sheet. I had students check off each camp item as they completed each challenge. I like to initial the box on each child’s paper to ensure proper completion.
CAMPING CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 4:
I am always happy to see my students work hard in every classroom transformation we do! As a reward when students finished all ten division challenges, I gave my class wooden pencils that looked like real pieces of wood. I found these on Amazon. Another teacher on my team gave out marshmallows as a treat instead. You can be as creative as you want! There’s also a certificate included that names students “Expert Campers” when they finish the camping classroom transformation.
CAMPING CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION STEP 5:
I made an additional writing activity for early finishers. Each poster has a QR code on it where they can scan it and learn fun facts about camping.
