2 VERSIONS OF EVERY MYSTERY (3 & 5 CLUES)

Differentiation can be tricky in any classroom. Every teacher has students of multiple ability levels who all require their attention. How do you help them all at once?

Two versions of an activity! With reading mysteries, you can choose between the 3 Clue & 5 Clue versions to give each student exactly what they need.

Are you short on time or need fewer clues for students to solve? Use the 3 clue version! Do you have longer class periods or students who need a more challenging assignment? Use the 5 clue version!

PRINT AND DIGITAL

Choose between print and go or the digital version with Google Slides. These are easy to assign in Google Classroom and are perfect for teachers who have copy limits.

FAST FINISHER ACTIVITY

If students finish early, give them a certificate of completion and a directed drawing (includes 6) to complete while others continue working.

BENEFITS OF PHONICS MYSTERIES:

  • print and go
  • no prep!
  • digital option (Google Slides)
  • fun and engaging
  • easy to differentiate
  • encourages critical thinking
  • 3 Clue and 5 Clue options
  • aligns with reading standards
  • perfect for phonics review!

HOW TO USE:

  • Use in small groups: Complete with students together at the back table.
  • Use whole group: give each student a copy and complete it together as an entire class
  • use in table rotations
  • use in centers

Every mystery comes with different clues for students to solve. Each time they solve a clue, students are given a phrase that will tell them what to cross off their recording sheet. Students are actively using their critical thinking skills to determine answers in these detective worksheets! When all clues are complete, students will solve the mystery!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Do these come with 3 clues or 5 clues?
Both! There are 2 versions so you can use the version that works best with your class. Or, you could differentiate and use the 3 clue version with some students and the 5 clue version with other groups. Both versions lead to the same conclusion/culprit, ensuring that students will not be aware of the different leveled assignments.

How do I use this with my students?
You can use this whole group, small group, in partners, table groups, independently, as homework, and more! Younger students will need support reading the directions the first few times they complete these mysteries. I’d suggest completing them with teacher support in whole group or small groups at first. As students become more comfortable, working in pairs and independently will become more feasible.

Are the phonics mysteries different from the math mysteries?

Yes! The suspect list stays the same, but the clues and answers are completely different. That means you can use both versions without repeating the mystery—students will uncover a different culprit or secret location each time. Want a closer look? Check out the previews to see how the clues change between subjects.

Is a digital version included?
Yes! The digital version is available in Google Slides and the link is included in the printable PDF. You can download the Google Slides to use in PowerPoint if needed as well.

Why do the main mystery and the extra mystery look the same?
The main mystery and the extra mystery feature the same clues but focus on different skills. This design ensures that students of varying abilities can work on different mysteries without realizing they are tackling different challenges.

What should students do if they finish early?
A fast finisher directed drawing activity is included for students who finish early! There is also a certificate of completion for every student. You could also have students work on incomplete assignments or read a book.
