Winter is such a magical time of year! This blog post shares my top ten favorite winter math centers with you that are perfect for the month of January. Third grade students will enjoy these winter math centers that spiral review skills previously learned earlier in the year.
MULTI-DIGIT ADDITION GAME
This multi-digit addition game is a great help for 3rd graders in practicing and developing their skills in adding large numbers. In this multi-digit addition game, students have to figure out how much money each customer spent at the ski shop. There are 20 different task cards, a recording sheet, and answer key included. This fun winter game will spice up your math centers (3.NBT.2).
Students race in teams to be the first team to finish lining up all of the cards. Each card has a missing factor card where students have to figure out the missing multiplication or division factor. It’s perfect for winter and will allow students to practice this important skill. Each team has the same cards, but the cards line up in a different order so that students cannot peek at another team’s cards. The first team to line up all of their cards in the correct order wins (3.OA.4/6).
MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION WORD PROBLEMS
In this snowman game, students answer multiplication and division word problems and get to build a snowman at the same time! Each time they answer a card, they get to add a piece of their snowman to their game board. There are 48 question cards included and 24 chance cards. The chance cards can spice up the game and help or hurt a student’s chances of winning. The first person to complete their snowman wins the game (3.OA.3).
GEOMETRY QR CODES
Students identify the geometric shape on each card. When they figure out the answer (example: rhombus, they scan the QR code on the card and will be given an alphabet letter. Students find “rhombus” on the Mystery Phrase sheet and fill in the corresponding letter. After all the cards have been answered, the Mystery Phrase will reveal a secret phrase to students that is winter themed. There are three mystery phrases included in this pack (3.G.1).
ROUND TO THE NEAREST HUNDRED
Snowman Land helps students practice rounding numbers to the nearest hundred. Students have to help each snowman find their way home! There are five “lands” that each represents a different hundred. Each snowman task card has a number on it that needs to be rounded in order for the snowman to get home. Students sort the snowmen into the correct “land” to help each snowman get home safely (3.NBT.1).
MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION FACT FAMILIES
Penguin Family helps students gain practice with multiplication and division fact families! Each penguin family contains a mom penguin, dad penguin, a big brother penguin, and a little brother penguin. Each penguin has a multiplication or division equation on it. Students have to match up the penguins into groups of four to make sure each penguin family has all four fact family equations and four penguins. An example would be: mom penguin (4×6=24), dad penguin (6×4=24), big brother penguin (24/4=6), and little brother penguin (24/6=4). There are MANY penguins included and students will be challenged while trying to put all of the penguin families together (3.OA.4/6).
Third grade students will enjoy finding the perimeter with this math game! Mommy Snow Woman is trying to hang up all of her pictures on the wall. To help her, your students have to find the perimeter of each picture frame. Students are provided with 14 cards, a recording sheet, and an answer key. This cute game will be sure to spice up your winter centers (3.MD.8).
There are four kids in this game that have lost their snowmen! Each kid has a list of fractions they are looking for. Your students need to find the snowmen that belong with each kid! You can play this as a sorting activity or give each student a different kid. Then, students will race to see who can find all of the fractions their kid is looking for before the other players. This is a great way for students to get some hands-on fraction practice while having fun at the same time (3.NF.1).
FRACTIONS ON NUMBER LINES
In this game, students identify fractions on number lines and earn arctic animals on each turn. Each time they get a question correct, they get to add an arctic animal to their collection. The first person to get 8 animals wins the game (3.NF.2).
This is a simple matching game that allows students to practice finding the area when given a word problem. Each magical creature has to be matched to the correct house. When students read each area word problem, they will determine where each magical creature belongs. It’s an adorable game with a lot of skill based practice involved (3.MD.5/6).
