4th grade math is a lot more fun when you have St. Patrick’s Day games to go along with it! These are common core aligned and easy to use in your classroom. This blog post shares my favorite St. Patty’s Day math activities for the classroom. Fourth grade students will enjoy the green-themed math centers that spiral review skills previously learned earlier in the year.
In this game, students have to match each piece of leprechaun gold which is an improper fraction with a mixed number rainbow. This matching game helps students practice converting improper fractions to mixed numbers or mixed numbers to improper fractions. You can play as a whole class by giving each student a rainbow or coin or set it up in a St. Patrick’s Day math center. Aligns with 4.NF.3.
MULTIPLY FRACTIONS BY WHOLE NUMBERS
Students race in teams to see which team can line up all of the cards in the correct order first! Students will practice multiplying fractions by whole numbers in this fast-paced game. The answers are NOT reduced to help students simply practice multiplying fractions by whole numbers as an intro. Aligns with 4.NF.4.
ADD AND SUBTRACT MIXED NUMBERS
Students get to put together a leprechaun in this fun St. Patrick’s Day game for two to four players! Each time a student answers a question card, they get to add a part of their leprechaun to their playing area! If a student draws a chance card, they must follow the words on the card that may help them or not! The first person to finish building their leprechaun wins the game. In this game, students are solving questions that help them practice adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Aligns with 4.NF.3.
MULTIPLY FRACTIONS BY WHOLE NUMBERS WORD PROBLEMS GAME
There are 24 cards included and three games in this pack! Students have to solve word problems including multiplying fractions by whole numbers to figure out the mystery phrase. Each time they find an answer, they scan the QR code to figure out the mystery letter that the card goes with. In the end, students should be able to spell out a word that relates to St. Patrick’s Day. This is a class favorite! Aligns with 4.NF.4.
Students play a fractions game where each rectangle whole number matches with a circle that has a fraction on it. Students lay down all of the circles and have to be the first one to grab the corresponding fraction that goes with the equivalent fraction on the card! Aligns with 4.NF.1.
COMPARING FRACTIONS ERROR ANALYSIS
This is an error analysis themed St. Patrick’s Day math game where students have to look at the two fractions the leprechauns compared and decide if the fractions were compared correctly or incorrectly. There are fractions with the same denominator, same numerator, and some fraction pairs with unlike numerators and denominators. Students need to use their knowledge of fractions to decide if the fractions were compared correctly. Then, they put a full pot of gold (if the answer is correct) or an empty pot of gold (the answer is incorrect) next to each leprechaun. Aligns with 4.NF.2.
AREA AND PERIMETER GAME
All students choose a leprechaun and put it at the start of the rainbow. Each time a student answers a question, they get to move forward on the rainbow towards the gold pot at the end. The first player to make it there wins! Students compare area and perimeter, find missing sides given the area, find missing sides given the perimeter, and have to determine if two shapes have the same area or the same perimeter. Aligns with 4.MD.3.
MULTI-DIGIT MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION
These math puzzles are perfect for St. Patrick’s Day! Students will practice their multiplication and division skills with these multi-digit puzzles. There are 5 multi-digit multiplication and 5 multi-digit division puzzles included. Students practice 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication, 1 digit by 2 digit multiplication, 1 digit by 3 digit multiplication, and 1 digit by 4 digit multiplication. For division, students practice 4 digit by 1 digit division and 3 digit by 1 digit division. There are ten puzzles included in both color and black and white. They are TOUGH puzzles and are great for enrichment for your higher students. Aligns with 4.NBT.5 and 4.NBT.6.
MULTI-STEP WORD PROBLEMS
Students answer multi-step word problems about Saint Patrick’s Day. Each time they get a question correct, they get to randomly choose a piece of gold from the middle. Each piece of gold has a different value on it. The person who has the most valuable gold pile at the end wins! Aligns with 4.OA.3.
ADDING FRACTIONS WITH SIMILAR DENOMINATORS
Students answer a green Saint Patrick’s Day hat question card. If they add the two fractions with similar denominators correctly, they get to randomly choose an emoji out of the bag. And If they get a lucky emoji, the question card is theirs to keep. If they get an unlucky emoji card, they have to put their question card back in the bag. The person with the most question cards at the end of the game wins (denominators with 10/100). Aligns with 4.NF.5.
